October 6, 2003 Newsletter: An Online Update from the Central Florida Chapter

FAMB FALL 2003 GOLF TOURNAMENT

We did it again. Just when we thought we had done our best, the Central Florida chapter topped ourselves once more. Our Fall Golf Tournament on Friday, October 3 was the most successful event yet. We sold out 144 foursomes, and every sponsorship we had available, no small thanks to our Lenders and Affiliates who chipped in. But if you missed the tournament, you can still enjoy the pictures.

OCTOBER 14 ORGANIZATIONAL MEETING

We wouldn't usually call a Chapter Meeting in the same month as another major event, such as a golf tournament. But on October 14, we are having a Special Meeting to vote in new bylaws and to do some planning for the exciting year ahead. Usually our Chapter Meetings involve networking, valuable information from speakers, or fun presentations (such as July's toga contest). But this one will be a working meeting.

Committee Chairs and the Executive Committee are inviting members who would like to get involved and be more active participants in our chapter to come and find out what it's all about. We need a few good men and women to push our chapter to the next level of success.

INSTALLATION BANQUET PICTURES

We put a link up for pictures from our Installation and Awards Banquet a few weeks ago. But due to technical issues, we couldn't get more than 1 picture up. Finally, the other photographs have been posted, so be sure to check them out.

PS: If you liked Wayne as Elvis, you're going to love these.

AMERICAN DREAM DOWNPAYMENT ACT PASSES

Last week the U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 1276, the American Dream Downpayment Act. Sponsored by Rep. Katherine Harris (R-FL) from Sarasota, the bill was designed to help tens of thousands of low-income families and individuals achieve the American dream of purchasing their first home.

The American Dream Downpayment Act will provide $200 million in grants in each of the next two years to cover downpayment and closing costs for first-time, low income families. The recipients will be households with incomes below 80 percent of the area median income. Recipients will receive grants that will average $5,000.

MBA CONVENTION

The Mortgage Bankers Association is having its 90th annual conference in San Diego, California this month. Among the speakers scheduled are Bob Dole, Al Gore, General Tommy Franks and HUD Secretary Mel Martinez. Although Secretary Martinez has said he won't make any announcement about a final rule for reform of RESPA, the industry is eager to hear anything he might say that will suggest what HUD will do.
