Senate Bill to Reform Health Insurance Blocked by Dem's |
A bill that has successfully passed the US House of Representatives for several years was very close to a vote on the Senate Floor last Thursday, May 11. But the motion for cloture - to end debate and procede to a vote - was defeated 55 to 43 almost along strict party lines. FAMB has supported this bill and has urged its members to action several times in recent months. Senator Mel Martinez is a co- sponsor of the bill, but Senator Bill Nelson has repeatedly refused to support the bill and was one of the 43 votes against on Thursday.
However, the success for FAMB and for small business owners across the country is the groundswell of support that arose for this measure. The National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) was one of the many national and state associations siding with FAMB on this bill. The NFIB President gave heartening remarks to his members on Friday on their website linked below.

Habitat for Humanity Leads in Affordable Housing |
A former Lake County school administrator is the most recent recipient of a house from Habitat for Humanity in Lake County. After the recent real estate boom, affordable housing is almost as dry as the underbrush in Central Florida. Fortunately for Rheba Turnbull, Habitat for Humanity continues to provide a valuable resource in a market that is increasingly unaffordable for the working class. Her story is related in a recent article in the Orlando Sentinel.
