Guide to the Florida House of Representatives
The laws that most directly affect our industry are written in Tallahassee. we've recently had several changes to our Florida Statute 494, including the addition of a continuing education requirement and the designation of a principal representative for lender licensees. We've also seen the addition of a new law, the Florida Fair Lending Act. These pieces of legislation have been the direct result of a long and effective working relationship between our association and our Representatives If you're not sure what district you are in, go to the FAMB Elected Officials in Florida page and enter your address to find your legislators.

In both the House and the Senate, the Republican Party is in the majority. This means that Republicans choose the Speaker of the House or the President of the Senate. The President of the Senate sets the agenda for the session, appoints chairs and members of committees and has a huge influence on what gets done.

Bills that are introduced in Congress will often come from committees that are organized to handle issues of a similar nature. Or, once they are submitted, they will be referred to the committees that have bearing on the legislation. Knowing your own legislator is important, but it's also valuable to know other legislators who sit on committees that may write legislation or hold hearings related to our industry.
